Roleplay Active In: Next Generation, possibly beyond
Name: Daniel "Danny" Kite
Gender: Male
Age: 23
Race: Human
Profession/Rank: Lt. Commander/Engineer
Appearance: Danny is of average height and thin/wiry. He has loose black hair that often falls forward into his ice blue eyes. His clothing style varies, but is often kept simple and practicle. He always like to be ready to get his hands dirty, and appearance often comes second to him.
Personality: Danny has had an eye on a position in Starfleet since he could first remember. The stories of exploring the galaxy and encountering new races and technologies always thrilled him. His father had been a Captain in the earlier years of the federation, and as a child he had always been excited by the stories his father had told him. He was determined to follow in his father's footsteps, but found that his nature did not suit him naturally to become a commander (he has improved upon this skill through his experience aboard the Tuolumne, though he is still very much a team player). While eager and determined to accomplish whatever task is set before him, Danny is rather on the quieter side except among close friends. He takes charge in his assigned duty, but at times lacks the firmness in judgement and command needed when delegating to others. He's friendly and open to most people and easy to get along with, though he isn't overly trusting of beings of strangers. He is a hard worker, and while he may not always think of the conventional means of accomplishing a task, if there's a job to be done, he'll get it done. He does tend to be overly focused on his work, and it is hard to interrupt him when he gets going on a project. In short, he is tenacious to a fault. He tends to work too much, much as his father did, though he is sensitive if someone links the two factors together.
Other: History: Danny was born in Gloucester, Massachusetts on Earth and grew up along the seaside. He began work as a lobsterman and worked part time servicing and crewing fishing boats. While he got by on this living, he used his earnings to pay for a spot in the Starfleet Academy. His work on ocean ships got him interested in the field of engineering, and he spent much of his free time working on an old ship that his father no longer used. Daniel’s father, once a Starfleet captain, has since retired but remains working at the Earth starbase, and still takes mercanary missions for the federation. His mother divorced his father when he was 12, because she was tired of his father’s undying commitment and dedication to his work. He has not seen her since. While working at the boat repair shop, repeat customers would often bring in other things for Danny to fix or to play with, having noted his avid interest in the area. It was an old android head that he first became interested in artificial intelligence. He built his first android from that head, having much experience “macguyvering” things together from spare parts he had lying around. It was little more than a simple computer system with programmed responses, but it peaked his interest in the field. He now makes it his special interest and hobby in his spare time, and is working on finding new applications and changes for it within existing frameworks aboard his current assignment. When a position opened up, he jumped at the chance to take it.
Roleplay Sample:
The bay was nearly empty, the only light currently left on the small headlamp that adorned the youth's head. It was strapped tightly around a forehead covered in loose, black hair, the bangs that often hung forward pushed back in an odd bludge under the strap. The normally muted sound of tools tinkering away beneath the hull of the shuttlecraft echoed through the otherwise silent bay. With a satisfying click of the aft hull access plate, the young man slid himself out from under the craft.
Danny was new to starfleet, but already he felt exhilerated. Each little bump, each little problem, excited him. And to be on a starship, exploring the galaxy, who knew what strange new worlds lie out there, what races, what technologies...He smiled to himself at the thought, wiping his hands on the legs of his grey coveralls and standing up. With a quick flip of the wrist he pocketed the spanners he had been using and with the other hand removed the headlamp, letting his hair fall forward over his ice blue eyes. His face was smudged with sweat and dirt from the job, though he was sure that the shuttlecraft would be in proper working order come time for its next use. That thought in mind, he headed back to his own quarters.
Danny had wanted to join starfleet since he was young. He had always admired the stories his father had told from the days when he was a revered Starfleet Captain, and had often dreamed of discovering the stars himself. At Starfleet, he had excelled at the top of his class in his chosen career path, becoming the youngest engineering graduate to date. And now he was living his dream.
With the comforting whoosh of his door opening, Danny stepped inside his quarters. Bits and pieces of electronic equipment were strewn about the available working surfaces, little lights blinking on and off, the odd whirring sound emmanating from some unknown piece at the bottom of the pile. With a stretch and a yawn, he discarded the headlamp into the pile and headed for the showers. Another satisfying day in Starfleet.
(Ugh, sorry the sample wasn't so great. I had to rush the end.)
